I’ve learned my lesson about muscle atrophy. Considering I’ve been laid up completely or at least on a consciously reduced activity level since my little ski mishap on February 5, I have a new appreciation for the needs of muscles.
For a while my knee hurt so much that I didn’t care that I wasn’t exercising. Then physical therapy got me working at least my lower body and feeling decent. But wow, since I’ve backed off PT and just done some here and there walking and playing around, it just ain’t enough.
Now really, I'm not claiming that I was a superior example of physical fitness prior to February 5, but this is ridiculous. I went bowling tonight and after two games (both under 100, I might add) I’m whooped. A little stall building and weaning over the weekend had me stumbling to bed by 9:00 pm. And the best one, I walked around a field playing with my dog and my quads were sore for 2 days!
How quickly the body deteriorates. It doesn't seem that I've really gained weight considering my clothes still fit the same...but stamina and strength? Apparently, I need to consult my dictionary because my body certainly doesn't have a clue.
I still have to be careful with my choice of activities because of my knee, but if I don’t build my strength back up I’ll never make it on the next trail crew outing! That’s it…I’m joining a gym.

your posts are cracking me up...i see on mondays post you are going backpacking this summer, then in the next post, you need oxygen after 2 games at the bowling alley! ;-)
You might want to quit reading the hiking book and start hiking!
:-)
LOL. I'd love to but apparently my knee prefers the book! [see today's post]
well, i hope your knee heals up before summer. and i hope you do some "minor" hiking before you do any serious hiking..(i always liked hiking at the natural bridge park...think thats east of you)
