La Universidad Católica

I attended la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso in the foreign exhange student program. I studied Chilean culture & society and advanced Spanish. Classes were from 9 am - 1:30 pm Monday - Friday. Because we were sitting at desks quietly listening to the teacher, this is where I felt the most earthquakes.

The university is dubbed as "the refrigerator" because in this region of Chile they do not heat the buildings and the stone university is ridiculously cold. Scarves and coats are as much a part of the fashion as jeans & sweaters because you wear them even when you're indoors. The climate is mild but the ocean makes for a very damp cold in the winter. When the sun is shining, the open air hallways & gathering places are a refreshing change from the frigid classrooms.
