There is a place in the world that Wal-mart has not taken over…it is called Central Chile. Although there is a large supermarket similar to what we have here in the US called Jumbo, it is not the most popular place to purchase most food items.
The local market held every Wednesday & Saturday is where many people buy and sell just about everything including fruits & vegetables, meats & cheeses, seafood, cookware, and flowers. Here is a shot of the gigantic pumpkins they sell. The purchaser chooses a pumpkin & the seller uses a huge knife to chop off the desired amount.
When my Chilean mom would go to the market for the week’s produce for a family of 6 teens & adults, she would spend about US $20. And did I mention that the fruits & vegetables are better than anything I’ve ever tasted here in the states?
