La ropa - Clothes

One thing is sure about life in all the places that I visited in Chile...you can tell if someone lives in a house by whether there is laundry hanging out to dry. It doesn't matter if you live in a small village in the foothills of the Andes where you count the number of hills to judge distance (above), or if you live in a small apartment with only one window in the bustling city of Valparaíso (below), there is always laundry hanging out to dry. I have seen laundry out at night and I have seen laundry out in the rain...I assumed it was simply forgotten and not expected to dry.

Ah, yes, there was one place where I did not see laundry hanging out to dry. That was in the south in the city of Valdivia. There it rains constantly. We went to see a play in Valdivia and when I asked about needing dress attire, I was told, "No, jeans & hiking boots are fine. This is Valdivia. People don't dress up. They get rained on." Hmmm...interesting.
