Mysteries of Aging

I'm really not old but I am old enough to have noticed changes in my body through the last 10 years or so.

For example, my mom insisted that I would be able to eat anything I wanted without a weight change until the age of 35. Well, she was off by 10 years. I woke up on September 26, 2002 and suddenly noticed that my clothes fit differently after a week's diet of ice cream for breakfast, Little Debbie snack cakes for lunch, and cheeseburgers and fries or pizza for dinner. Granted my insulin and cholesterol levels were very happy when I made some major diet changes at age 25.

I was also told through the years that my tastes would change as I got older. I've noticed that now I love green olives, dark chocolate, diet soda, coffee and fish. I'm ok with those changes. But I noticed a change tonight, with which I'm a little uncomfortable.

I had my dinner of microwave popcorn...I know, I know...I need to stop that habit too. After a time I was ready for another little snack. I perused the cupboards, glanced at the contents of the freezer, and settled on something in the refrigerator.

Now mind you, I looked at the Breyer's vanilla bean ice cream with orange sherbet in the freezer, passed it up and grabbed the pickled beets in the refrigerator.

PICKLED BEETS!!!!!!

Ok, first, I've never liked pickled beets until about 6 months ago and now I'M PASSING UP ICE CREAM FOR PICKLED BEETS!

Suddenly my mind conjures up images of my great-grandmother (who was wonderful in all other aspects) smearing beet juice with all the other food on her plate, thoroughly disgusting me. I'm not old enough to love an icky food that my great-grandmother enjoyed!

Sigh. Well, I guess it’s only going to get worse from here. How much longer before I start drinking V8? Or worse…prune juice!

Excuse me. I think I just choked on a pickled beet.
