Breakfast in my bag

Last weekend turned out to be fantastic. The plan was supposed to be to go to the gorge on Saturday morning for an overnight backpack. However, I was informed on Friday night around 10:30 pm that the plans had changed and we were going to Big South Fork, TN and leaving as soon as I got home.

Well, for those of you who know me…you also know how attached to making plans I am. The change of plans did NOT go over well considering I had worked late every night last week including 14 hour days on Thursday and Friday. Needless to say…I was exhausted and was in no mood to pack a pack and ride in the car for 3-4 hours.

I hastily packed my pack refusing any help out of pure grumpiness then collapsed into bed insisting that we leave in the morning…and we did.

Saturday morning we picked up Kodie and headed south. We took the scenic route but eventually made it to our destination after a couple of stops, one of which involved a king-size Drumstick ice cream. Yum!!

We arrived, got a backcountry pass, and set out. I was very excited because I got to try out my new gaiters, which are totally awesome by the way.

The hike in was beautiful and the trail ran along the river the entire way. Directly below our campsite was a class IV section of whitewater, which was amazing. Clearly a death trap for me as a whitewater boater considering I cannot consistently cross eddy lines…and that is sad…I have SOOO much to learn in a kayak.

After an enjoyable evening in camp I settled into my bag. In the morning I got up and took Kodie out for a quick stroll and returned to the tent. Without intent, I fell asleep for quite some time. I woke to the sound of the tent unzipping and the smell of something delicious.

For the first time in the states…well, for the first time ever…I had breakfast in “bed” but it was really in my bag in the tent in camp in the Big South Fork. (that sounds a bit like the old song “there’s a hole in the bottom of the sea”)

Chris had gotten up and prepared pancakes in camp, packed in syrup, and served me a piping hot breakfast. I’m used to cold pop tarts in the backcountry! My goodness, what a spectacular treat!!!!
