The Red River Gorge Sucks

The Red River Gorge sucks… go tell you friends.

My goodness gracious, if I was looking for solitude and serenity, the Red River Gorge was the WRONG place to find it. I would have been better off trying to seclude myself at Walt Disney World than where we were.

At first the trail wasn’t too crowded but after a mile or two we couldn’t get away from all the people. Kodie went with us and I usually catch her and take a step off trail so other hikers can pass. I understand that not everyone likes dogs so this is my method for not having an annoying dog.

Well, on Saturday the stinking trail was so crowded we realized all we were doing was standing still and letting people pass. Finally I just let my dog walk past people.

Finding a campsite was even more of a challenge. After finding our goal campsite already taken, we set out for another. I might also add that we did understand the issue we may encounter considering the number of backpackers we passed.

We took a side trail where we knew there were a number of campsites. Guess what, the first 2 or 3 were occupied. We continued on to find a beautiful spot with a fire ring and a pile of wood already collected. We dropped our packs and began collecting more wood, which is how Chris discovered a beautiful overlook. We both walked down to the overlook…the trip took approximately 20 minutes or so…we passed another 4 or 5 backpackers during this jaunt. We went back to our campsite only to find a group of about 8 backpackers setting up camp a few hundred feet from our campsite.

Sigh.

Regardless, we did enjoy the trip. But it did remind me of a friend who worked at a tack store in Montana. They had a big problem with west-coasters coming in and screwing up the “laws of the land” and it really upset the cattle ranchers. So, in an effort to reduce the population spurt they sold shirts that said, “Montana sucks…go tell your friends.”

So here I am doing my part to reduce the crowds at the Red River Gorge…

THE RED RIVER GORGE SUCKS…GO TELL YOUR FRIENDS!!!
