Federal 1040 -- ¡ADÍOS!

Díos mio, I picked a bad year to try to do my taxes myself. 2006 was a busy year for me in tax terms because I paid tuition, interest on student loans, my loans went into repayment, I worked several jobs resulting in 5 W-2 forms, and I sold and bought stock. Good grief! Maybe for an experienced tax preparer this wouldn't be any big deal. But for a rookie this was an absurd amount of paperwork to sort through and decipher.

Usually my mom does my taxes because...well, that's what she does...and she likes it. She gets excited when her new tax books come in the mail and she considers it "reading for pleasure." I know, she is demented.

Well, this year I decided to do them myself and use the software program that Barbara has downstairs on the check advance computer. (Oh, for those who don't know, my apartment is above a check advance store and a liquor store. It makes for some very interesting parking lot/sidewalk encounters at times!)

The program is pretty simple, you just keep answering the questions. However, because it has been like 8 years since I've done my own taxes I did not have things filed as I should have. This tax preparation resulted in two grueling evenings downstairs and many trips running to the filing cabinet, the check book, and the car. My brain is fried but you can bet that I'll keep better records for next year.

Thankfully, I made it through the whole process and my final return passed mom's inspection. Shoo. If this is part of being a "big girl", I'm simply not interested.

And I also think that people who willingly do accounting and taxes are just a little bit off!
