I finally did it tonight! I rolled the kayak. I stopped posting a while ago about my failures because it was so stinking depressing...but now I finally have some progress to tell. Woohooo!
I still can't say that I "have" my roll because I can't roll with my eyes closed. But I can roll in the pool with my goggles on, which is huge progress for me. I've been trying to learn this since January and it has been a slow, grueling, and frustrating process. I'm used to picking up physical tasks quickly and easily. The kayak experience has humbled me.
This does give me hope and when I "have" my roll then I'll buy a boat. I don't want to invest that kind of money until I know that I can do it. I've already gotten quite a bit of use out of the PFD, helmut and wetsuit that I bought a few weeks ago. I started with that gear because I can use those items in a raft, canoe, recreational kayak, sea kayak...pretty much anything you can put on the river. And it is nice to finally have something of my own and not always have to borrow everything.

Congratulations on your success! From your writings, I would have pegged you as the type who would conquer this challenge. We readers knew you could do it!
Speaking of equipment - I was wondering if you could offer me (and all your other readers) recommendations on backpacks.
Specifically, I'm looking for a good traveling pack. I’m hoping to go overseas in a few months and need a nice, sturdy, flexible pack for a 3 week trip.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
