I went to my first Quinceañera tonight. I had a fantastic time.
A Quinceañera is a Mexican celebration for a girl turning 15 and transitioning from girlhood to womanhood. It is a similar to the American sweet sixteen. Ok, well, it’s not really that similar but we can relate to it.
The Quinceañera is a huge party following a mass. We did not go the mass, only to the party. In appearance one might think it is a wedding. The birthday girl is in a formal gown, father in a tuxedo, and the guests to the nines. There is a cake that really resembles a wedding cake, gifts, and lots of music, food, and beer.
I didn’t expect to know anyone (other than the friends with whom I went) but once I arrived I saw a guy that I went to college with. Roger then introduced me to his cousin (I can’t remember how they were related) who works with polo ponies and knows some of the same people I know in the polo world. It is such a small world!!
If you get a chance to go to a Quiceañera, don't be shy…it will probably be a great experience.
