Versailles, KY: Treeless Town

Normally I love my town of Versailles, Kentucky. Kodie and I enjoy walks through downtown because the people are friendly, the buildings are historic, and the sidewalks are shaded.

However, they are shaded no more.

For some reason, Versailles, Kentucky is cutting down all the trees that line Main Street…and I’m really not happy about it.

This morning I noticed pylons blocking off a section of Main Street. Soon I saw lots of workers and a chipping machine. I thought, “Oh good! They’re going to give the downtown trees a pruning!”

Well, they gave them one hell of a pruning all right…pruned them down to about 3 feet of bald, naked, disgusting trunk.

Downtown Versailles is lined with quaint little restaurants and specialty shops, which are frequently visited by retirees, both residents and tourists. One of my favorite things about living here is seeing all the people enjoying downtown. After a couple hours of trinket and dress shopping, visitors can get an ice cream at the corner drug, sit on a shaded bench, and watch the happenings of the town.

Now, I guess all I’ll see are panting people with ice cream disasters wiping sweat from their brow wondering why the hell they came to this town.

So, Versailles, if you read this, I hope you have another plan for shading our beautiful downtown before it withers away this summer.
