Update: Chocolate - Maybe When I'm Older

I'm pleased to say that Kodie is fine. She did have a mild reaction to the chocolate that she ate but nothing serious, thank goodness. Read the story here.

She continued to be really annoying and hyper through Saturday afternoon. She also woke up on Saturday morning very itchy with slightly swollen eyes. Unless I did something to take her mind off the itchiness, she scratched at her face and ears and chewed on her front legs constantly. I didn't want this behavior to result in hot spots so I decided to hang out at the dog park. I wasn't in the mood to deal with the crowded park so I went to the Coldstream park for lots of space and a few dogs. I took a Nalgene full of water, a magazine, and a small blanket to lay on. We spent 4 hrs. hanging out at the park and saw a total of 7 dogs.

It turned out to be a wonderful way to help Kodie work the chocolate out of her system and kept her mind occupied so she didn't scratch. She ran for a while and then just laid under a shade tree with me. When we got home she was back to her normal self. Relaxed and enthusiastic but not annoying. Hooray!

And for today's activities I just spent some time tidying up the house and now I think we'll go for a hike at Bernheim. Yeah!

Whew. I'm glad to hear that Kodi is doing better. That was a scary episode, I'm sure. I had a similar episode with my dog and onions a few years back. An ex-friend of mine thought she was doing good and being a friend to my dog Gus (his real name, in fact) by giving him a bite of her onion rings. He naturally woofed several of them down before I came to his rescue and removed the friend from my life. Well, I removed her from my house first, then from my life, but I digress. And of course, as these things tend to do, this happened on a Friday evening. Anyway, I was on pins and needles for the next several hours not knowing what to expect or what might happen. I was scared to let him go to sleep that night because I wasn't sure if he'd wake up. So I stayed up all night with him and made him run around in the backyard a lot. He eventually started eating some grass and he purged himself after a while. I then made sure he drank lots of water and we went to sleep. I woke him up early the next day and he seemed fine, but I ran him around a bit more. He had his normal apatite and all seemed well. Eventually I was satisfied that he was going to be OK, but I was scared for a while there.

On a side note: My powers of observation are amazing and I often astound myself with my level of experiential perspecuity. I kid of course. In fact, I'm frequently obliviuos. Case in point: I just realized that your name rhymes with the name of your dog. After all this time, it finally hit me. Yep - I'm that slow sometimes. Was that naming scheme on purpose?

Glad to hear your dog is fine after onion rings. Just another instance where my rule of "no people food, ever" holds to be in the best interest of the dog. This rule does not make me popular with many people. And, obviously, this only works for purposeful consumption...the chocolate was an accident.

No, the name thing was not on purpose. Acutally, I don't care for the name Kodie at all but I didn't name her so I just had to roll with it.

FYI: The names in my "family" Jodi, Kodie, Katie. Although I like the name Katie, it does make for confusion at the vet. I didn't name the cat either!

You can always make a dog throw up with hydrogen peroxide--a few tablespoons of it will do--and if it's ingested anything it shouldn't have, it'll get thrown up. Just FYI. One night Graysie (our Gorge dog) took all of Guy's pills somehow. We made him throw up, and stayed up with him (and called the animal poison control #, which at $55 is still great to use sometimes!); he was fine, but it sure is scary when stuff like that happens! Just remember, keep hydrogen peroxide handy. If the dog won't drink it alone (most won't), mix in a little milk and then they usually will. If still not, put in a syringe without a needle and give that way. Two doses would be the most I think it would ever take. Once Hopple fought it and it took about 4 doses, but he was also really big (85-90 pounds). We've had our go with hydrogen peroxide and always keep it in the kitchen easily reached.
