Thank You Dry Milk

I have recently discovered a little wonder of the modern (or maybe not so modern, I don't know) world called dry milk. And I'm loving every minute of it.

I do not like to drink milk. I never have...at least not since I was weaned. Frankly, I can't stand it. I can barely even look at it while I cook with it. There are a few cereals that I will eat with milk but then I drain all the white goo from the spoon before eating the cereal.

So...it is very difficult for me to keep milk without it going bad. And, as I've been told, the price of milk is really going up. Normally when I think I need milk, I'll buy a quart, use half and the rest sours. I throw it out and recycle the bottle. That's what I do.

Well I finally decided this was terribly wasteful and stopped buying it. But then I didn't have any milk to make cream soups like tomato and potato. And I really like cooking my oatmeal with half water and half milk.

I picked up a box of dry milk so I could carry it for cooking when I backpack. Then it dawned on me...DUH...I can mix it at home and use it for cooking! And it works great. And it doesn't go bad in 5 days. I mix 1 cup water and 1/3 cup dry milk to get 8 oz., which is just enough for a can of soup. Earlier in the week I had cream of asparagus soup and tonight I had tomato.

I love dry milk!
