Book with a Story

I read almost every night before I go to sleep.  Once I go to bed I dink around on my computer for a while, and then I read something until I get sleepy.  I'm a very slow reader and since I only read maybe 30 minutes tops it takes me quite a while to finish a book

Now, I also have several book shelves full of books.  Most of them are non-fiction because I really like to learn when I read.  [hence my success & geekness in college]  I recently finished a book I purchased in St. Louis called Black Indian Slave Narratives by Patrick Minges and decided that I wanted to start a new book.  One with a story.  And one I hadn't already read.

So I embarked on a journey through my book shelves to find a suitable book.

Shelf # 1:  Although I found some very interesting book about American Indian customs & lore, a book of quotes, and a gigantic encyclopedia dictionary, I found nothing with a story that I hadn't already read.  Next.

Shelf # 2:  I found several medieval Spanish books, [Ick.  Run, run while you still can.], some very good stories that I read when I was in grade 4, and several "how to" manuals for a variety of topics from investing to home repair.  Nothing with a story.  Time to go upstairs.

Authors Note:  By this time I was really perturbed by my lack of diversity in my book selection. What is the point of all of these books if I can't even find a fiction novel to read?  I half-stomped through the house muttering to myself, "All I want is a damn story.  A good story that I haven't already read.  Is that too much to ask?"  Kodie and Katie were both slightly disturbed by my performance of an angry child.

Shelf #3:  Here I found journals I had written in Chile, Spanish grammar books, and FINALLY!  A novel I hadn't already read.  So the object of my quest...A Painted House by John Grisham.  That's what I'll be reading.  I'll get back to you around Christmas to tell you how it was.

And if it sucks, don't tell me.  A lot of effort went into finding that book.  Now let's see how long I can stay awake.
