Lawnmower Graveyard

It's official.  It went to the lawnmower graveyard.  And it wasn't because of me!  And thankfully it didn't explode in my garage.  It simply didn't work any more.  It was taking air in to the gas and for the cost of the parts to repair it, so I'm told, it would be better just to buy a new one.  

So that's a task for this week.  I'm going lawnmower shopping.  Hmmm...sounds kind of fun.  I LOVE appliance shopping so if it is similar I'll have a great time.

I'm seriously considering buying an engine-less mower.  You know, like this...

It would be a lot less maintenance, I wouldn't have to worry about pulling my arm out of joint starting it, and there's no gas expense.  And no annoying my neighbors.  But of course I'd have to keep the blades good and sharp.  I'm not totally convinced that they work well.  Does anyone out there have experience with them?

I have a rechargeable electric lawn mower (no cords). I love it. No gas to buy, and when you want to start it, you just pull the handle back and its running. I can mow about 40 minutes on a charge. BUT...if you mow tall grass, wet grass, you will not mow nearly as long. Although it takes about 12 hours for a full recharge, you can recharge about 3 hours and be about 80 percent of full power. If you bog it down in deep grass, you will trip a 'breaker' in the mower, and it will shut off. You simply have to wait about a minute for it to reset. Thats the way mine works anyway, its a black and decker. I saw one advertised on tv for $399, and you could buy an extra battery pack to slap in if you needed more mowing time. That would be sweet, i cannot do that with mine. Think i paid about $400 for mine, and that was 2 years ago. The mower you were thinking about with no engine will have similar problems with tall grass or wet grass.

I noticed you posted the comment on monday..if you haven't already purchased a mower, then i suggest you think about this:
gas powered lawn mowers do not have any devices to prevent pollution, it is just raw exhaust gasses being spewed out... It will cost more up front to buy electric, and there are inconveniences...but can a person really think of themselves as an "environmentalist" if they aren't willing to sacrifice alittle convenience?

Cool, but certainly out of my budget. Electric mowers are ok but they burn coal to make the electricity so I question the "green-ness" of those. I still don't know what kind of mower I'm going to buy. I'm thinking maybe just hedge clippers! ha ha

Its true alot of power companies are burning coal to make electricity, but if you recharge the mower after 5 pm, electric useage is down, and so there is "excess" electricity that is literally going to waste anyway, its not like water, where it all gets used up, alot of electric 'potential' never gets used. So night recharges, although making the electric company extra money, does not burn any more coal. the mowers are much more pricey than the gas mowers though.
