The Price of Tomatoes

Slavery is an outdated, old-fashioned concept, right?  Hardly.  I recently read yet another good article on the horrific issue of modern-day slavery.  

Gourmet Magazine recently printed an article in their March 2009 issue describing the lifestyle of tomato pickers in Florida.  Migrant workers endure ridiculous conditions by which they are bound financially, forever struggling to gain their freedom.  I don't care if they're "legal" or not. People should not be treated this way.  They're trying to make a living to feed their families and get sucked into scams with little to no protection or recourse.

It happens people.  All the time.   And there is something you can do about it.

Buy local.  Eat seasonal.  Period.
